Axel Nielson
Grandmother was a good cook. She would sometimes make a
delicious chicken soup with Danish dumplings–a recipe which she brought from
Denmark. She also raised a nice garden and lovely flowers.
One day when she was down to the barn to milk the cows, she
got ill, and when Peter discovered she was staying too long, he went to see if
she was OK, but she was very ill and lay on the ground. Peter picked her up and
carried her in his arms to the house. They put her to bed and by the next
morning she was so ill they called Dr. Glen Niel. She passed away that morning
while the doctor was attending her and Axel, Peter, Victor, Edna and I stood by
the bed. This was 12 June 1929. She was buried in the Springville Cemetery.
About a year later, Axel sold their home and went to Manti,
where he married Karen Christensen. They worked in the Temple there but Karen
had persuaded him to put all his money from his home sale in her name. She
became very neglectful in caring for Axel, and often left him alone while she
visited with her daughters.
Eventually Axel became quite helpless and, one time when his
neighbors noticed they had not seen him outside chopping wood or doing chores,
the neighbor went over to see if something was wrong. The neighbor found him
lying on the floor and very ill, so they called Peter in Springville to tell him
his father’s condition. Peter immediately came to Manti and took his father
home, where he cared for him until his death. Axel passed away in 1947 and was
buried beside his wife in the Springville Cemetery. Karen Christensen never
returned any of his money or clothing.
