 Dedication

With deep heartfelt love and affection I dedicate this book to my husband John, my children: John, Jason, Jamie and Jessica; the four canine members of the household over the years that sat at my feet; and all of the family members from the left coast to the right coast. This book is about the people who labored and sacrificed between the East and West Coast and made a future possible for all of us in this big wide world we live in. Reminding myself often on this 35 year journey that by not having been a witness to the events and issues in their time, judgment for the outcome of decisions that folks chose is not ours to make. This journey also taught me that paper trails are merely clues, not always the truth, and not set in stone. I hope you will continue the journey with me as we continue to explore the family of Parsons.

Special family member contributors: John Ford, Charles Uebele, Jeff Wanee, Curtis Parsons, Clifford L. Parsons, Jr., the late Dorothy (Parsons) Floyd, the late William Schlotterbeck, the late Sue Hill, the late William Parsons Hahn, the late Richard Welton, and the paper research trails of the late Lloyd Parsons.

Introduction

S. THOMAS PARSONS
It requires some arbitrary chronology to arrange the scraps of history gathered from various sources and traditions that have come down from generation to generation. The various beliefs and ideas must continue to be proven (with cited sources) of those involved in the following generations. For that reason some of the details for the sons are listed along with their father, as they appear to have done many things together.

In Virginia Parsons MacCabe's book, Parsons Family History, published in 1913 (reprinted 1972 by McClain Printing Company, of Parsons West Virginia hereafter indicated as (VPM), Virginia did not provide sources for the material given in the book, however, we are indebted to her for her persistence to get something in writing and having had the gumption to get it published many years before there was a computer. In updating the family history as the Parsons Family Historian, I have found that she can not be held to blame for the omissions of data that were requested of family members, and she cannot be held responsible for many of the errors made on information furnished from people's memories. By and large it does provide a good foundation to work with, and in continuing her work as the Parsons Family Historian it is hoped that her work will be continued as she had requested in her book. In her book she states our Thomas is the son of William from Maryland who arrived from England in 1725 but as of this writing hasn't been proven with documentation.

As of April 2007 DNA genetic testing indicates there is no blood connection to tie the Charles Parsons (Jackson County, West Virginia) lines that are found in the Hampshire and Hardy County records as neighbors to Thomas into our lines. The research continues!

A timeline for Thomas, Sr.
1730-
The land that Jonathan Coburn owned was named Coburn Run and is so noted in the deeds of Isaac Parsons' sons when they purchased land there, which is known today as Mill Run near the HorseShoe Bottom where the Parsons settled. It seems that Jonathan Coburn was living in Moorefield in the 1730's and in Petersburg by 1746 and by 1760 they were in Morgantown living. It appears that James Coburn was the father of Jonathan Coburn, James having died 1749.
